ABOUT THE PROJECT:

This was a personal project that I decided to build, I always thought that the process of finding a dog was hard in regards to the fact that buyers would never know if the breeder is trust worthy or not. Also according to statistics, 80 percent of people choose the dog they want based on looks not knowing what breed of dog would best suit their lifestyle. Puppify app brings breeders together into one platform and takes the user through an on boarding process asking a series of questions

Research

Primary Research

Online Surveys - Qualitative Research

A series of online surveys where conducted asking various questions around the dog adoption process. The questions asked specifically touched on how people find breeders or adoption shelters online and how people feel about the process. Also a series of questions where asked regarding how people find the exact breed they are interested in and if they base there decisions off of the characteristics of that breed or just mainly on the aesthetic of the dogs physical features.

Results & Key Take aways

1. 72% of people said that they find a breeder or a shelter through a friend or relative that has used it before.

2. 90% of participants said that when they find a breeders website online it looks sketchy or not reputable. Sometimes there are no testimonials or and kind of rating on quality.

3. Only 37% of participants stated that they research breed characteristics before considering a dog

4. 87% of new dog owners are not prepared for the full responsibility of dog ownership. One participant stated “Once we got our puppy we where so happy initially but we did not expect having to get up in the middle of the night to take care of him.

Secondary Research

Competitive Analysis

I analyzed a similar tool petfinder.com and compared certain components that touched upon the pain points that where brought out by my primary research and components that did not which I focused on in the design of the application.

Design Features That Touch Upon Pain Points

- Dog Matching Feature

- Find Dogs Based On Your Location

- Dog Breed Aesthetic Break Down filter (Large, small, hairless, fur colour)

Design Features That Are Missed

- Best rated breeders in your area, rating system for breeders
and testimonials

- Lifestyle questions for the user to find the best matching breed.

QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

Statistics

“70% of soon to be dog owners are not prepared for the full responsibility of dog ownership”

“33% of new dog owners end up returning the dog or giving it away due to lifestyle, health or financial issues”

“83% of new dog owners are interested in breeds that do not suit their lifestyle. ”

CONCLUSION

Insights from the research that was conducted provide a clear path forward to how the Puppify application be designed. Actionable points include having an easy and educational process to matching a dog to the user based on personal lifestyle questions. The application should act as a platform to connect breeders too soon to be dog owners and at the same time educate users on dog breeds. Another design component that will be added to the application is a clear and simple rating system for breeders and shelters that will give users an accurate idea of quality.

 THE PROBLEM

The majority of potential new pet owners choose to purchase or adopt dogs that do not necessarily fit there Lifestyle. The process of finding a reliable breeder is cumbersome and difficult to understand.

User Persona

USER FLOW

This user flow focuses on one specific journey the user can take. The user starts off their journey on the home screen and then taps the “match me” card which brings them to the first stage of the series of questions. These questions are meant to be used to match the user with the breed of dog that would best match their lifestyle. Once the user is matched, they either have a choice to find the nearest breeder based on their location, or learn more about that specific breed. If the user decides to look for the nearest breeder, they are taken to a map screen where they can enter their location and the app will find the nearest breeder. From there the user can either look at customer reviews left by people, or contact the breeder. The last step of the process is for the user to leave contact information in a form and submit it to the breeder so that they can be contacted.
